Join the Initiative

Joining the Police Data Initiative is relatively easy. There are no costs to participate, no required forms or writing, and all agencies sizes, types and locations are welcome.

To join the Initiative, agencies should e-mail us the information requested below:

Name, title, email address and phone number for the primary point of contact who will be responsible for carrying out your agency's open data commitments, and providing regular status reports on your progress and activities related to open data.

Name, title, and email address of leaders who have been briefed and are in support of your jurisdiction's participation in the Police Data Initiative, including Police Chief, IT Director, and City/County Manager's (or equivalent).

List of at least 3 open data sets about policing that you can commit to making available within 90 days unless available now. The data sets do not need to be published at the time of joining. Some example data sets released by other agencies include community engagement, police training, police administration of naloxone, stops data, incidents/calls for service, assaults on officers, or police department demographics. What these data sets all have in common is that they are OPEN – incident-level (not summary statistics) and machine readable (not PDFs).

The full list of data released through this initiative to date is available here.
